Richard Remching
Richard Remching took a lease of the manor and Commandery of Carbrooke, in Norfolk, from Thomas Southwell of Wood Rising, about 1545. A commandery was a house of the Knights Hospitallers, a military religious order, and Carbrooke had been theirs. With the lease he became lord of the manor.
He and his wife Elizabeth had seven children who are known. Edward was the eldest and Elizabeth the eldest daughter. The rest were baptized at Carbrooke, where the clerk spelled the name Rimshing: Anne on 23 September 1549, "Marye Rimshinge daughter of Richard Rymshinge" on 14 November 1550, "Richard Rimshinge son of Richard Rimshing gent" on 28 August 1551, and Thomas on 22 January 1553. Henry is named in the will.
He farmed on a large scale. Lea and Hutchinson reckon that he held at least 344 acres, a rent charge, and the faldage of 600 sheep. Faldage was a lord's right to have sheep folded on his land, so that their dung would manure it.
He made his will on 12 March 1566/7 as "Richard Remchinge of Carbrooke, yeoman." To his son Edward he left £20 at twenty two. Henry was to have £20 in various payments until he was twenty one. Richard, who was an apprentice, was to have £30 "to be paid to the person to whom he the said Richard is apprenticed." Thomas was to have £30 at twenty two. Each of his daughters Elizabeth, Anne and Mary was to have £20 at twenty one or marriage. "To my sister Agnes Plaforde, £5." To his wife Elizabeth he left the lands in Carbrooke and elsewhere that he "had of the grant and feoffment of William Hubberd of Carbrooke for the non-payment of a certain sum of money." She was his residuary legatee and executrix. The witnesses were Jherome Spynge, Thomas Skott, Thomas Moore, Edward Toogood and Henry Montynge.
He was buried in Carbrooke church twelve days later. The register reads: "Richard Remching was buried the 24th daie of Marche." His widow proved the will on 9 May 1567. In 1574 his daughter Elizabeth married Richard Lincoln of Hingham, and his son Edward was a feoffee of her marriage settlement.
