Richard Welch
Richard Welch was born in South Carolina about 1762, in what became the Sumter District, according to a family genealogy of 1959. The 1830 census counts him among men aged seventy to eighty, which would put his birth a few years earlier.
He served in the Revolution. The South Carolina archives hold an audited account for him, file number 8338 among the accounts audited of claims growing out of the Revolution. The account, sworn in August 1785, pays him for thirty-six days as a private in General Francis Marion's brigade in December 1782. Marion's men were militia who fought the British and the Loyalists in the swamps of the Pee Dee.
He married three times, according to Welch family writing. His first wife, Mary, called Marguerite, is given the maiden name Stuart; she died before June 1791. She was the mother of Timothy, John, Henry and Bryant. On 10 June 1791 he married Sarah Ervin, born in 1768. Their son James was born in the Sumter District in 1799. By 1806 he had a third wife, Faraby.
About 1802 he moved to the Georgia coast. In 1806 he was living in Effingham County and bought land there from Robert Ivey. On 25 May 1807 he and Faraby sold 170 acres on the Big Canoochee in Bryan County to Bryant Welch, with Timothy and Henry Welch as witnesses.
In January 1815 he and his sons' families left Georgia for the Mississippi Territory. They were in Wayne County by 1816 and on Okatoma Creek in Covington County by 1820, when the county tax list names him with John, Timothy, Henry, James and Bryant Welch. A Richard Welch is in the Mississippi state census of 1823 and in the Jones County census of 1830.
The 1959 genealogy says he died at Natchez on 10 November 1838. A Richard Welch who died that day is buried in the Natchez City Cemetery. A memorial for him also stands in the Welch-Graham Cemetery near Ellisville.
