Bryant Welch
Bryant Welch was born in South Carolina about 1786. A modern marker over his grave reads "Born S. C. 1786 - 1830." A family genealogy of 1959 says only that he was born before June 1791, and Find a Grave gives 17 April 1786 in the Sumter District.
He grew up on the Georgia coast. By 1806 he was in Effingham County, where on 11 August he swore in court that he had witnessed a deed from Robert Ivey to Richard Welch. On 25 May 1807 Richard Welch of Effingham County and his wife Faraby sold him a plantation of 170 acres in Bryan County, on the waters of the Big Canoochee River. The price was $250. Timothy and Henry Welch witnessed it. The land had been granted to John Bandy in 1801. On 20 February 1808 he added fifty acres more from Isaac Futch and his wife Unity, on the northeast side of the Big Canoochee "at a place call'd Mann's Cowpens," for $80.
About 1807 he married Sabra Martin, called Sally. Their first children were born in Bryan County. Cynthia and her twin sister Mercy were born there on 20 December 1814.
In January 1815, when the twins were six months old, the Welch family left Georgia for the Mississippi Territory. The 1959 genealogy says Bryant went with his father and his brothers John, Timothy, Henry and James. They were in Wayne County by 1816. The 1820 state census lists Bryant in Wayne County. That same year the Covington County tax list names John, Timothy, Henry, James, Bryant and Richard Welch one after another. The family settled on Okatoma Creek.
He died about 1830. His widow Sabra headed her own household in Jones County in the 1830 census. He is buried in the Welch-Graham Cemetery near Ellisville, Jones County.
His children married into the families around them. Betsy married Asa Anderson, a brother of Sarah Anderson Collins. Desdemonia married Riley James Collins, Sarah's son. Cynthia married Allen Valentine, and Sarah married Allen's brother Darrell.
