Robert Henry George
Robert Henry George was born on 4 July 1847 at Mount George in Yell County, Arkansas. Cemetery records name his parents as Hardin George (1805 to 1877) and Angeline Miller (1811 to 1889). He was one of a large family that included Lucy Ann Elizabeth, William Presley, Martha Louisa, John E., Mary Frances Jane, Jesse James, Margaret Virginia, Hardin Wesley, David Hawkins, Thomas Jefferson and Evaline Geneva George.
Arkansas left the Union in 1861 and joined the Confederacy. Federal troops took Little Rock in September 1863, and Union regiments were then raised among Arkansans loyal to the United States. On 20 January 1864, at sixteen, Robert George enlisted as a volunteer in the Union army "to serve three years or until the war was ended." He served in Company F of the 3rd Arkansas Cavalry. He received an honorable discharge on 22 May 1865.
About 1870 he married Sara Ann Greenwood, a Dardanelle girl about seven years younger than he was. They had three children: James Franklin, called Frank, in 1870; Susie Virginia in 1872; and Louis Taylor on 7 January 1874. Sara died on 19 December 1875, at about 21. Her stone calls her "Mother" and "wife of Bob George."
About 1877 he married Nancy Ann Sloan, and they had thirteen children, nine girls and four boys. "Aunt Nancy" and an infant died in 1901. In 1903 he married a widow, Mrs. Ella Meeks, and they had five more children, four boys and a girl. His youngest, David Milton George, was born in 1914, when Robert was 66.
"Uncle Bob" joined the Church of Christ about 1870. He died at his home near Centerville on 10 January 1933, aged 85 years, seven months and six days. He had fathered twenty-one children. Seven had died before him, and twelve of the fourteen still living came to his funeral. His government stone at Mount George Cemetery reads ROBERT GEORGE, CO. F, 3 ARK. CAV., with a Masonic square and compass, BORN JULY 4 1847, DIED JAN 10 1933.
