Robert Kahler
Robert Kahler, the husband of Hazel L. Obin, was almost certainly Robert John Kahler Jr. He was born on 24 July 1940 in Boston, the elder son of Robert J. Kahler, who worked in the automobile trade, and his wife Sarah N. Hyder. Hazel's obituary calls her "the wife of the late Robert Kahler," and a Robert Kahler of these dates is buried at Hanover, the next town to Pembroke, where Hazel grew up. No record of the time names the two of them together, so the match rests on those facts and on a family tree that joins them.
In April 1950 Robert was 9 and living with his parents on the third floor of a Boston house. His father, 39, worked in automobile parts control at an automobile sales agency and had put in 52 hours the week before. His mother, 36, kept house. His brother, Peter M. Kahler, had been born that February. A lodger, Muriel M. May, a 25 year old registered nurse at the city health clinic, lived with them.
He married Hazel L. Obin, the daughter of a Pembroke box maker. Their sons were John, born about 1964, Fred, born at Weymouth in 1967, and Robert.
Robert Kahler died in June 1968, a month short of his twenty-eighth birthday. His son Fred was about a year old. He is buried in Hanover Center Cemetery, where his father was laid beside him in 1975 and his mother in 1990. Hazel was still Hazel Kahler when she died at Wareham in 2020, fifty-two years after him.
