Robert Little
Robert Little lived in Randolph County, Virginia, in the valley of the Tygart River around Beverly, the county seat. His burial at Beverly Cemetery gives his birth as 11 March 1790. Where he was born, and who his parents were, is not known.
On 3 December 1822, in Randolph County, he married Mary Elender Caplinger. She was the daughter of George Caplinger, who had founded the Caplinger settlement on the river a few miles north of Beverly. Robert was thirty two. Their daughter Sarah was born in April 1824, a son in September 1825 and a daughter, Jane Elizabeth, in March 1829. The son was named George Caplinger, after his mother's father.
The census of 1840 found Robert Litle at the head of a household in Randolph County. That summer his daughter Sarah, sixteen, married Elijah M. Hart. The marriage record, dated 22 July 1840, names Robert Little as her father.
Robert died on 2 March 1846, nine days short of his fifty sixth birthday, and was buried at Beverly. In December of that year his daughter Jane E. married Hoy McLane, and her marriage record names him as her father too. His widow Mary lived another twenty six years, at the end in the McLane household at Beverly.
The county clerks of his lifetime wrote the name Little or Litle. His children and grandchildren wrote Lytle, and that is the spelling his burial carries.
