Robert Mitchell St. Clair
Robert Mitchell St. Clair was born on 24 April 1821. Family accounts name his parents as George St. Clair and Elizabeth Maitland. He married Sarah Elizabeth Kelley, and they raised a family in the hills of Botetourt County between Troutville and Blue Ridge, where the St. Clairs were numerous enough to give their name to the family burying ground.
Robert and Elizabeth had nine children between 1847 and 1863: George Thomas, Sarah Elizabeth, Amanda Ellen, Mary Frances, Robert Pascal, called Bob, Samuel Isaac, Malinda Lavinia, Rufus Washington and James William. George Thomas died in 1861 at fourteen, and Samuel Isaac as a baby in 1860. When his daughter Mary Frances died in 1931, her death certificate named her parents as Robert M. St. Clair and Elizabeth Kelley.
A drawn likeness shows him bearded, with his hair long over his ears, in a dark coat, his hands folded. Robert Mitchell St. Clair died on 22 April 1882, two days before his 61st birthday, and was buried in the St. Clair Cemetery under an arched marble stone carved with an open book.
