Mary Frances St. Clair
Mary Frances St. Clair was born in Botetourt County, Virginia, on 2 March 1854. Her parents were Robert Mitchell St. Clair and Sarah Elizabeth Kelley, named on her death certificate. She grew up among the St. Clairs of the Troutville and Laymantown country, whose family burying ground is the St. Clair Cemetery.
On 9 December 1875 she married Solomon D. Secrist in Botetourt County. She was 21. She bore twelve children, and six of them died young. Her youngest, Mae Amanda, born in 1894, married George Henry Adams. A tintype of her as a young woman shows dark hair piled high, drop earrings and a dark bow at her collar. A portrait in old age shows her seated in a carved chair in a black dress with a white lace collar.
Solomon died in April 1929. Two years later, on 2 May 1931, Mary Frances Secrest died at the home of her son L. R. Secrest near Webster, of congestion of the lungs after an illness of eight days. She was 77. The funeral was held at New Haven church by the Rev. J. N. Newsom, assisted by the Rev. G. H. Broyles, and she was buried in the family cemetery beside Solomon. Their shared stone reads FATHER, SOLOMAN D. SECREST, AUG. 17, 1854, APR. 20, 1929, and MOTHER, MARY F. SECREST, MAR. 2, 1854, MAY 2, 1931, AT REST. Her nephews carried her, and her granddaughters, among them Ruth and Frances Adams, carried the flowers.
