Rodney Sherwood Crowell was born on 31 January 1907 at South Yarmouth, the fourth of the five children of Stephen Crowell and Anna Eliza Chase. In 1910 he was three, in his parents' house at Yarmouth with his sister Beatrice and his baby brother William. His parents' marriage broke up when he was a young man. His father married again in 1919 and moved off the Cape to Rehoboth; his mother married again in the late 1920s and went to Detroit. Rodney stayed where he was born.
In 1927 he married Mildred Louise Thurber of Attleboro, who was seventeen. Their son Rodney was born about 1929 and their daughter Gayle Elizabeth on 12 February 1937. In April 1940 the four of them were living in the same house in Yarmouth they had lived in five years before, in the part of the town bounded by the Bass River and Nantucket Sound. In April 1950 Rodney, 43, Mildred, 40, and Gayle, 13, were at South Yarmouth, and Rodney was working as a yard man for a coal and lumber dealer.
He died on 8 April 1993, at eighty-six, in the town he had never left, and was buried at Pine Grove Cemetery, South Yarmouth, lot 395B in the rear section, under a flat granite marker that reads CROWELL, 1907 RODNEY S. 1993. Mildred's name was cut beside his when she died three years later, and their daughter Gayle was laid in the same lot in 2008.
