Stephen Crowell
Stephen Crowell was born on 30 October 1879 at South Yarmouth, the son of Albertus H. Crowell and Emily Smith. He was their only child to live; a baby son died unnamed. Later in life he gave his birth year as 1880, and that is the year cut on his stone, but the state's own register says 1879.
On 9 July 1899, at North Falmouth, he married Annie Eliza Chase, seventeen, of Dennis, the daughter of Daniel B. and Annie E. Chase. The record calls him nineteen, born at Yarmouth, the son of Alburtus H. and Emma Smith Crowell. In June 1900 the young couple were living with his parents at Yarmouth. Five children followed: Beatrice Eleanor in 1900, the twins Gladys Pearl and Frank Sears in 1903, Rodney Sherwood on 31 January 1907 and William Davis in 1908. Gladys died in 1920 at seventeen. In 1910 the family was at Yarmouth.
The marriage ended. On a date not found Stephen and Anna parted, and in 1919 he married Clara Jane Ellis, born 1874. Anna married Nelson Palmer Hanley in the late 1920s and went with him to Detroit. Stephen left the Cape for Rehoboth, in Bristol County, where he registered for the draft in 1942 at sixty-two, giving his birth as 30 October 1879. He died at Rehoboth on 14 October 1942, two weeks short of sixty-three, and was buried there at Oak Knoll Cemetery.
