Roelfke Oosterhuis was born on 18 May 1849 at Niezijl, a small village on the canal in the municipality of Grijpskerk in the western clay country of Groningen. Her father, Jakob Ubels Oosterhuis, was a gaardenier, a market gardener, of thirty-four; her mother was Foktje Jans Boonstra, a Frisian woman from Achtkarspelen. An elder sister Roelfke, born in November 1847, had died in March 1848, and the new baby was given the name again. Her brothers and sisters were Ubel (1837-1918), Bregtje, later Bertha (1840-1916), Jan, later John (1852-1936) and Hendrik, later Henry (1855-1942), and the births at Oldehove and Niezijl between 1837 and 1852 fill the register.

The family emigrated to western Michigan, where the name became Oosterhouse; she had been sixty-two years in the United States when she died, so she came about 1867, or by another reckoning in 1870. She married Pieter van den Houten, a Goedereede man six years older, about 1868, and was known as Rose Van Houten. Their children were William, Folkelina, Edward, Arthur, Katie, Clarence, John and Nellie, born between 1869 and 1892. The family farmed at Lucas in Missaukee County, where Peter died in May 1914.

In her last years she lived at 1936 Blandford Avenue in Wyoming Township on the south side of Grand Rapids, with a Mrs. E. Apol, who was the informant at her death. Dr. Andrew Van Dellen attended her from April 1929 for chronic myocarditis, a disease of the heart muscle, with senility contributing, and she died at 8.30 on the evening of 4 September 1929, aged eighty years, three months and seventeen days. Her parents were recorded at her death as Jacob Oosterhouse and Lena Boonstra, both born in the Netherlands. Zaagman and Son of Grand Rapids took her north and she was buried beside Peter at Lucas on 7 September 1929, under the stone cut MOTHER ROELFKE 1849-1929.
