Folkelina van Houten
Folkelina van Houten, called Lena, was born at Grand Rapids on 24 May 1870, the second child and eldest daughter of Pieter Willems van Houten, a farmer born at Goedereede on the island of Goeree in South Holland, and Roelfke Jacobs Oosterhuis, called Rose, from Niezijl in Groningen. Her name was her mother's mother's, Foktje, in the fuller form Folkelina. Her brothers and sisters were William (1869-1938), Edward (born 1877), Arthur (1879-1960), Katie (1884-1911), who married a Hendricks, Clarence (1887-1970), John (1889-1954) and Nellie (born 1892). The family farmed at Lucas in Missaukee County, in the cut-over pine country of northern Michigan.
In 1888, at eighteen, she married Johannes Jacobus Van Tuinen, called John, a Frisian schoolmaster's son seven years older who had come over in 1881. They had nine children: Gertie, Rose Jacoba, Cora, Jacob, Louise, Agnes, Peter, William and Wesley Arthur. Cora died in 1916 at twenty. Her father died at Lucas in 1914 and her mother at Wyoming near Grand Rapids in 1929; both are buried at Lucas.
John died in December 1929. Lena lived on as a widow for thirty-eight years, long enough to see great-grandchildren, and died in 1967 at ninety-six or ninety-seven. She is buried beside him in Blain Cemetery at Cutlerville under the stone cut MOTHER, LENA VAN TUINEN, 1870-1967.
