Rosanna Emiline Canon

Rosanna Emiline Canon was born on 25 April 1840 near Morgan Springs, in Perry County, Alabama. Her father was Malcolm Demus Canon, a planter who owned a large farm, slaves, a cotton gin and a blacksmith shop. Her mother was Nancy Blackburn Boyd, his second wife. The 1850 census found Rosanna at ten in her father's household. It indexes her mother as "Pansy B," a misreading of Nancy B.

On 17 November 1857, at seventeen, she married John Alexander Hopkins of Perry County. She had thirteen children over the next twenty-five years, from Nancy in 1858 to David Winn in 1883.

In the Civil War her husband was wounded at Lookout Mountain. She went to Atlanta to nurse him. Her daughter Susan told the story in 1949.

In November 1875 the family left Alabama by wagon. On 22 December they reached a farm in Tyler County, Texas, that belonged to her father. She was thirty-five. About two years later they moved to Moscow in Polk County, where the 1880 census found her as "Roseana E." Her daughter Lizzie married V. A. Collins there in 1889.

Her husband died at Chester, Tyler County, in February 1897. Lizzie died three years later, at twenty-nine. Rosanna lived on at Chester as a widow for twenty years. She died there on 5 December 1917, aged 77. Her Texas death certificate names her parents as "Malcom Dennis Canon" and "Nancy Boyd." She was buried beside her husband in Mount Hope Cemetery, and the family marker names her "Emeline Canon Hopkins."
