Russell Fisher Timberman
Russell Fisher Timberman was born on 16 September 1902 at Bridgeton, Cumberland County, New Jersey. His natural parents were Lawrence Fisher and Emma Wheeler. He did not grow up with them. He was raised in Pittsgrove Township, Salem County, by Benjamin and Catherine Timberman, and took their surname. Fisher stayed with him as his middle name all his life.
In 1920 Russel, as the census taker spelled it, was 17 and single, living in Pittsgrove Township as the adopted son of Benjamin Timberman, 60, and his wife Catherine, 70. Both had been born in New Jersey.
He married Sarah Madorah Berry, a girl from Elmer. Their son John Russell, called Jack, was born at Bridgeton in May 1924. A daughter, S. Emma, followed about 1927, and a second son, Laurence, called Larry, in 1931, also at Bridgeton. Laurence shares his given name with Russell's natural father.
By 1930 the family lived in the borough of Elmer. Russell was 28, Sarah 24, Jack 5 and Emma 3. They were in the same house in 1940, when Jack was 16, Emma 13 and Larry 10.
Russell built a trucking company, R.F. Timberman Express, Inc. In April 1950 the census taker found him in Elmer, 48 years old, working as the manager of a trucking business that he owned himself. Sarah kept house. Larry, 19, still lived at home. Jack lived in the next house with his wife and two small children, and he drove one of the trucks.
Both sons worked for their father for many years. Larry served in the Navy from 1951 to 1954, on the aircraft carrier USS Hornet, and came back to the business. Later Jack and Larry left to start their own freight line, Fastway Freight.
Sarah died at Elmer on 12 April 1957, aged 51. On the last day of that year Russell married again. He and Inez Davies Fraze, a widowed nurse born at Warren, Pennsylvania, who lived on Front Street in Elmer, went south to Eastville, on the Eastern Shore of Virginia. Thomas H. James, a civil celebrant, married them there on 31 December 1957. Russell was 55, a widower, and gave his occupation as truck driver and his address as 131 South Main Street, Elmer. Asked for his parents, he wrote Lawrence Fisher and Emma Wheeler.
Russell died on 28 May 1981, aged 78. He was buried beside Sarah at Chestnut Grove Cemetery in Elmer. His stone reads "In Loving Memory" and records service in the United States Navy as a seaman second class.
