John Russell Timberman
John Russell Timberman was born on 11 May 1924 at Bridgeton, Cumberland County, New Jersey. Everyone called him Jack. His parents were Russell Fisher Timberman and Sarah Madorah Berry, and he was their eldest child. A sister, S. Emma, followed about 1927, and a brother, Laurence, called Larry, in 1931.
In 1930 the family lived in the borough of Elmer, in Salem County. Russell was 28 and Sarah 24. Jack was 5 and Emma was 3.
Jack served in the United States Army during the Second World War. He came out a corporal. His bronze grave marker reads "CPL US ARMY WORLD WAR II".
He married Laverne Iola Farmer, a girl from Fyffe, in the hill country of DeKalb County, Alabama. She was born in January 1925, eight months after him. The records found do not say where or when they married. Their son John Russell was born about 1947 and their daughter Laverne Dale about 1948, both in New Jersey.
On 6 April 1950 the census taker found the young family in Elmer, in dwelling 37 on the street. Jack was 25 and Laverne 25. She had been born in Alabama, he in New Jersey. John Russell was 3 and Laverne Dale was 2. Jack had worked 60 hours the week before as a truck driver for a trucking business. His parents lived in the very next house, number 38, with his brother Larry, who was 19.
The trucking business was the family's own. Jack worked many years for his father's company, R.F. Timberman Express, Inc. Then he and his brother Larry started a business of their own, Fastway Freight.
Two more daughters came later, Sarah Gail and Debra Lynn. Debra was born in 1957. Sarah Gail died before her father.
Jack belonged to the Frank D. Sayre Post 1259 of the Veterans of Foreign Wars in Elmer. Laverne died in March 2004 at 79. Jack lived on in Pittsgrove Township, which surrounds Elmer.
He died there on 6 July 2014, aged 90. His obituary ran in the South Jersey Times on 10 July. It names his children John Timberman, Laverne Timberman and Debra Lynn Timberman as survivors, with his brother Larry, his sister Emma Both, several grandchildren and great grandchildren. It notes that his wife Laverne and his daughter Sarah Gail had died before him.
The service was held on Monday, 14 July 2014, at the Adams Funeral Home, 111 South Main Street, Elmer. The viewing began at 9:30 in the morning and the service followed at 11. He was buried at Chestnut Grove Cemetery in Elmer. A double stone there carries his name beside Laverne's, with a place kept for Debra. A separate bronze veteran's marker lies at the grave.
