Ruth Alden
Ruth Alden was a daughter of John Alden and Priscilla Mullins, who came to Plymouth on the Mayflower in 1620. She was born about 1637, probably at Duxbury, where her parents settled. The Mayflower Society's genealogy of the Alden family numbers her among John Alden's children, and the Society accepts her as his daughter.
On 3 February 1658 she married John Bass, a young man of Braintree in the Massachusetts Bay colony. His father was the first deacon of the Braintree church. The town clerk wrote "John Bass and Ruth Aulden were maried the 12 mo. 3, 1657, by Mr. John Aulden of Duxbury". The year then began in March, so the twelfth month of 1657 was February 1658. The magistrate who married them was her own father.
She made her home at Braintree, where her husband was a wheelwright. Six of her children were recorded there: John in November 1658, Samuel in March 1660, Joseph in December 1665, Hannah in June 1667, Mary in February 1670 and Sarah in March 1672. A 1940 genealogy of the Bass family adds a daughter Ruth, born about 1662.
She died at Braintree on 12 October 1674, aged about thirty-seven. The clerk wrote "Ruth Bass, the wiffe of John Bass, dyed the 8th mo. 12, 1674". Her youngest child was two. Her husband remarried the next September and lived another forty-two years.
