Ruth Blanchard

d. 1805
Died 1805
Children include Phebe

Ruth Blanchard was the wife of Aaron Miller, a Revolutionary militiaman and horse brander of Rutland, Vermont. Her maiden name comes from the Daughters of the American Revolution. Their file on Aaron gives his first wife as Ruth Blanchard and his second as Elizabeth Cox Ladd.

Her gravestone gives her age. She "died Sept. 2d 1805, in the 53d year of her age". That puts her birth in 1752 or 1753.

Three of her children are known. Ruth was born on 16 December 1773. She married Robert Loveland and died at Pittsford, Vermont, in 1846. Phebe was born about 1781 and married John Daniels of West Rutland. Miriam married Benjamin Bridge.

In 1805 Ruth and Aaron were admitted together to the Congregational church in West Rutland. The church's printed manual of 1858 lists them both. She died on 2 September of that same year.

She is buried in the Pleasant Street Cemetery at West Rutland. Her stone stands in one row with Aaron's. Beside them are a Blanchard stone and the stone of Lodema, wife of Hiram Smith. Below her name the stone carries a verse: "How blest are they who trust a saviour's blood / And die confiding in a gracious God ... And think oh Friends that she shall weep no more." Aaron outlived her by eight years and married again.

Her parents are not proved. Find a Grave makes her a daughter of Benjamin Blanchard and Ruth Wilcox, who are buried in the same cemetery. Benjamin was one of the early settlers of Rutland and a millwright, a builder of mills. Smith and Rann's History of Rutland County (1886) says he "built the mill, or a portion of it, for Colonel Mead at Gookin's Falls ... He did the work and lived and died on the farm." He died in 1801, aged seventy-five, and his wife Ruth in 1824.

A Wilcox genealogy of 1963 has Ruth Wilcox born on 10 January 1732, a daughter of Amos Wilcox, and married to Benjamin Blanchard. No will, deed or printed genealogy is known that names Ruth Miller as their daughter. Aaron Miller served in the militia under a Captain Nathaniel Blanchard. Whether he was the Nathaniel Blanchard of the memorials is not shown.
