Ruth Burdick

Ruth Burdick was a daughter of Joshua Burdick and Mary Kenyon. Her father came of the Seventh Day Baptist Burdicks of Hopkinton, Rhode Island, and was born there in 1800. The family moved into northeastern Pennsylvania, and the 1850 census lists daughters Esther, Ruth, Mary and Louisa in the household.

Her birth is given three ways. Her death certificate says 29 June 1838, at Carbondale. Her obituary says 29 June 1836, at Manchester. The 1850 census makes her about sixteen, born about 1834. The certificate was given by her son and is the one used here.

In 1852 she married Ellison Teeple, born 1831. They had daughters, among them Mary Jane Teeple (1859-1925), later Mrs. Wellington Jump. Ellison died in 1860, leaving Ruth a young widow.

In 1862 she married William Layton, a farmer of Manchester Township whose first wife, Elizabeth Teeple, had died that year. Ruth bore him Henry in 1863, Maude B. in 1868 and Earl C. in 1876. The family lived at Union, a hamlet of Manchester Township. William died there in March 1917, after fifty-five years of marriage.

Widowed a second time, Ruth went to live with her son Earl at Lookout, in Damascus Township. Her last illness ran through the winter. Dr. C. G. Corson of Rileyville attended her from September into March and gave the cause as organic heart disease of six months' standing. Her obituary said it was "the infirmities of old age, after illness of two months." She died at Earl's house on Thursday, 24 March 1921.

The funeral was held on Sunday at the Union church, with Rev. Sheeley officiating, and her grandsons carried the casket. She was buried in Union Cemetery, Manchester Township, beside William. Five children survived her: Mrs. William Taylor and Mrs. Wellington Jump, both of Binghamton; Mrs. Elizabeth VanLoan of Union; Mrs. Henry Teeple of Pine Mill; and Earl Layton of Lookout.
