Ruth Calista Edwards
Ruth Calista Edwards was born on 14 June 1849 in Pennsylvania. Find a Grave places her birth at Canonsburg, in Washington County, without a source. Her father was John Edwards, born in New York, "an old and well-known resident of Callicoon," the Sullivan County town across the Delaware from northern Wayne County. Her mother was Hannah Skinner, whose birthplace her family did not know.
She married James C. Kemp, an Englishman nine years older, in 1873 or 1877. Their son John Charles was born in 1875. The children who followed included Stephen G., Margaret Ada (Maggie), born at Honesdale in 1881, and Bessie. The family made its home in Manchester Township, near Stalker and Kellam's Bridge.
In 1914 she lost her daughter Maggie in August and her husband in November. She gave the details on his death certificate herself, as "Mrs. James Kemp, Stalker Pa."
She lived another ten years as a widow in Manchester Township. In January 1924 she took pneumonia. Dr. F. C. Frisbie of Equinunk attended her from 12 to 25 January, and a daughter nursed her at home. She died at four in the morning on 26 January 1924, aged 74. The funeral was held at the Union church, with Rev. Watson of Long Eddy, a former pastor, officiating. She was buried beside James in Union Cemetery on 29 January by the Damascus undertaker Valentine.
