Ruth Hadley
Ruth Hadley was born in Ireland on 6 February 1711/12. The meeting register of her parents' children enters her as "born in Ireland the 6th of the 12 mo 1711", the twelfth month then being February. Her parents, Simon and Ruth Hadley, were Friends of Moate Meeting in County Westmeath. They crossed to Pennsylvania in 1712, when she was an infant. Her father later became one of the trustees of New Garden Meeting.
She married Thomas Lindley at New Garden Meeting House in 1731. In 1753 they moved to the Cane Creek country of North Carolina, and her brother Joshua and sister Hannah came with their families. Thomas built a gristmill there in 1755.
Her son James took the King's side in South Carolina and was killed in the Revolution. In September 1781 a battle was fought at her husband's mill, and Thomas died on the day of it or the day after. She outlived him by four years and died on 4 December 1785. The date is from the memorial stone set for her and Thomas at Spring Meeting in 1928.
