Ruth Hull
Ruth Hull was born in Georgia, about 1823 by the census of 1850, though she was probably some years older. She married twice, and children of both marriages settled in Volusia County, Florida.
Her first husband was Bryant Hicks. Their daughter Martha Jane Hicks was born on 16 May 1839 in Nassau County, Florida, the county on the St. Marys River at the Georgia line. Martha Jane's death certificate of 1917 names her father as Bryant Hicks and her mother as Ruth Hull, born in Georgia. Two Hicks boys, Noah, born about 1837, and Samuel, born about 1840, both in Florida, were living with Ruth in 1850 and were probably her sons by the same marriage.
By about 1842 she had married James F. Raulerson, born in Georgia about 1822. Their sons William and Robert Rowan were born in Florida, about 1843 and on 1 December 1845, and Stephen in Georgia about 1848. In the 1850 census the family was living in Wayne County, Georgia, the county on the Altamaha River just north of the Florida line. Ruth was listed as 27. The household held Noah Hicks, 13, Samuel Hicks, 10, William, 7, Robert, 5, and Stephen, 2, along with a Martha Hull, 50, born in South Carolina, Tempy Lane, 16, and Robert B. Wilson, 50. The census of that year did not record how people in a house were related. Martha Hull was old enough to be Ruth's mother, and Ruth's daughter carried the name Martha, but no record says so.
Her maiden name, Hull, is given on the grave memorial of her son Robert Rowan Raulerson at Seville, Florida, and on her daughter Martha Jane's death certificate.
Her two families grew up a few miles apart in the west of Volusia County. Martha Jane married Archibald Minshew in 1859 and raised her children at Pierson. Robert Rowan Raulerson married Barbara Bradshaw in 1866 and farmed at Seville. Their descendants met again. Robert Rowan's grandson Jake Raulerson, born at Pierson in 1911, married Mildred Price at Fairfax, Virginia, in 1934. Mildred was the daughter of Alice May Minshew, the granddaughter of Willoughby Minshew, and the great-granddaughter of Martha Jane Hicks. So Jake was Ruth Hull's great-grandson by her Raulerson marriage, and Mildred her great-great-granddaughter by her Hicks marriage.
