Ruth Knapp
Ruth Knapp was born on 6 January 1641, a daughter of Nicholas Knapp and his wife Eleanor. Her father held land at Stamford, Connecticut, by 1640. Her mother died at Stamford in August 1658. Her father married again and died in April 1670. His will, dated the 15th of that month, names his children Moses, Timothy, Caleb, Sarah Disbrow, Hannah, Lydia and Ruth.
On 20 November 1657, at sixteen, she married Joseph Ferris at Stamford. The register writes it "20, 9, 1657", counting the months from March. Their son Peter was born there on 8 November 1660. They moved to Greenwich, where Joseph was one of the town's first proprietors. They had at least eleven children: John, Peter, James, Moses, Benjamin, Caleb, Joseph, Joshua, Hannah, Ruth and Lydia. Her daughter Ruth married Samuel Peck, the minister's son, in 1686.
Joseph died in 1699 and named her first among the administrators of his estate. On 15 June 1711, as "Ruth Ferris, widow of Joseph Ferris," she sold her son Joshua all her right, title and interest in her husband's estate. Her death is not recorded.
