Ruth Mitchelson
Ruth Mitchelson was born at Cambridge, Massachusetts, on 8 November 1638. Her father was Edward Mitchelson, Marshal-General of the colony. Her mother was Ruth Bushell, who had come over in the ship Abigail in 1635. Paige's History of Cambridge (1877), An Account of Percival and Ellen Green (1876) and the Shepard genealogy of 1886 all place her in this family. The Shepard book gives her birth as 9 November.
She was the eldest of five children. Her brother Thomas was born in September 1639. Her sister Bethia, born in 1642, married Daniel Weld. Her brother Edward, born in 1644, graduated from Harvard in 1665, became a physician, and was lost at sea the next year with Captain Scarlet. Her youngest sister Elizabeth, born in 1646, married first Theodore Atkinson Jr. and then Henry Deering of Boston.
Her family lived close to the Cambridge minister, Thomas Shepard. Her mother had lived in the same Yorkshire household as Shepard's first wife. When Shepard died in August 1649, her father helped take the inventory of his estate. Shepard's will left "to Ruth Mitchinson the Elder ten pounds." The elder Ruth was her mother. She was the younger Ruth, then ten years old.
On 20 October 1656, a few weeks short of eighteen, she married John Green, a tailor and the son of Percival and Ellen Green. Both were members of the Cambridge church. Her mother died in June 1664. Over twenty four years she had fourteen children: John in 1657, Nathaniel in 1658, Percival in 1660, Ruth in 1661, Samuel in 1663, Elizabeth in 1665, Edward in 1667, Thomas in 1669, Jonathan about 1671, Bethia in 1674, Joseph in 1675, Benjamin in 1677, and Mitchelson in March 1681, named for her own family. Mitchelson died that October, seven months old. Her daughter Mary's birth was not recorded.
Her father died in March 1681, and three months later her husband was sworn in his place as Marshal-General. Her husband died on 3 March 1690/1. She then married Samuel Champney.
In February 1696 her son Edward, a mariner, made his will at sea. The first gift after his debts was to her: "Item I give and bequeath unto my mother Ruth Champany thirty pound." He left his cloak to "my father Samuel Champney Sin'r," her second husband. In October 1701 her daughter Mary married the Rev. Nathaniel Huntting of East Hampton on Long Island. The date of her own death is not recorded.
