Ruth Peck was born at Greenwich, Connecticut, in January 1721. She was the youngest of four children of Samuel Peck, a carpenter who farmed in Old Greenwich, and his wife Elizabeth. Her great-grandfather was the Reverend Jeremiah Peck, Greenwich's first settled minister. Her father died in December 1733, when she was twelve, and her mother remarried John Clapson in 1735 and moved to Redding.

On 25 November 1742 Ruth married Nehemiah Hoyt of Stamford. In February 1745 she and Nehemiah sold to her brother Samuel Peck land in Stamford that had belonged to their father. They lived in Stanwich Society, the northeastern part of Greenwich, and had at least thirteen children. Two sons, Nehemiah and Noah, went north to Castleton, Vermont.

Nehemiah died in 1785. Ruth made her own will in 1799. It names her children and a granddaughter, Lydia, the wife of Daniel Hubbard. She died at Stanwich on 3 September 1807, aged eighty-six. The Peck genealogy of 1877 says of her, "She has a very numerous posterity."
