Sam Duggar

Sam Duggar was born on 14 June 1862. He died on 15 June 1898, one day after turning 36. His son Charles Alvin Duggar was then four years old.

Sam is the father named on every record his son left. Charles's Social Security application gave his parents as Sam Duggar and Martha Sims, and his Tennessee death certificate of 1955 gave them as Sam Duggar and Martha Simms. Charles was born at Nashville, Davidson County, Tennessee, on 4 May 1894, so Sam and Martha were in Nashville in the early 1890s.

Everything else about him comes from family memory. A grandson wrote on his son's memorial that Sam was supposedly born in 1862 at Wheeling, and that he died in a well cave-in at Wheeling, West Virginia, in 1898. The same account says the family had never been able to find any record of his birth, his death or his marriage to Martha.

In 1910 Martha was living at Stevenson, Jackson County, Alabama, as a widow with her son. She told the census taker she had borne two children and that one was living.

A flat granite marker in the Stevenson City Cemetery at Stevenson, Alabama, reads "In memory of Sam Duggar - Dad", with his dates. Below him on the same stone is "Willie A. Duggar Brother", born 18 August 1882 and died 24 December 1883. The words Dad and Brother are written from Charles's side of the family. Martha was later buried in the same cemetery.
