Samuel Alexander Ribelin
Samuel Alexander Ribelin was born in March 1849 in Rowan County, North Carolina, in the German Lutheran country around Salisbury where the Ribelins, Trexlers and Eagles had farmed since the eighteenth century. His parents were Jesse Ribelin and Elizabeth Trexler. His mother died when he was eight, in April 1857, and his father married again the next January. His father died in 1874, and the two lie in the churchyard of St. Matthew's Lutheran Church near Salisbury.
Sam went west. About 1877 he married Martha Charlotta Davis, called Mattie, a Louisiana girl whose mother had remarried and settled at Magazine, Arkansas, and the couple farmed in Petit Jean Township in Logan County, on the north slope of Mount Magazine. Their children were Baxter, born in February 1881, Mittie, August 1883, Verna, July 1884, Sallie, January 1886, and Ruth, June 1895; Mattie had borne seven, and six were living in 1900. The census of 4 June 1900 shows Sam, 51, farming his own land free of mortgage, with the four daughters still at home and the girls in school.
Verna married Daniel Webster Hooper of Blue Mountain in November 1902 and went with him to Oklahoma. Sam and Mattie stayed. In 1920 they were still in Logan County, with Sallie at home and a family of Foremans in the house. Sam died on 9 April 1924 and was buried in the Blue Mountain Cemetery under a double stone cut FATHER; Mattie's half of it, cut MOTHER, was filled in three years later.
