Samuel Clutterbuck

Samuel Clutterbuck was a gentleman of Cainscross, in the parish of Randwick near Stroud in Gloucestershire. His wife was named Mary.

Their first children were baptized at Stonehouse. Ann was christened on 4 January 1754 and died on 3 August 1758, aged four. John was christened on 15 June 1759. Mary followed on 22 January 1764. A son named Samuel was also born, though his baptism has not been found. The youngest, Elizabeth, was christened at Randwick on 1 November 1767.

Samuel made his will in about 1796. He signed it with his mark. The will opens: "This is the last Will and Testament of me Samuel Clutterbuck of Cainscross in the parish of Randwick in the County of Gloucester". By then he had a house for each of his children.

To "my son Samuel Clutterbuck" he left the dwelling house "wherein my said son doth now dwell", with its outhouses and gardens, in the parish of Stonehouse. To "my daughter Mary Clutterbuck" he left a messuage, a house with its outbuildings and ground, "formerly called by the name of the Golden Cross situate at Cainscross in the parish of Randwick". To "my youngest daughter Elizabeth Clutterbuck" he left a dwelling house, garden and orchard at Frampton upon Severn.

His own home went to the two girls together. He left "my said two daughters Mary and Elizabeth" the messuage "wherein I now live called the Gravel pits, lately purchased by me of Thomas Holmes". Everything else went to "my said dear wife Mary Clutterbuck", whom he made sole executrix. His son John is not named, and had probably died.

The will was proved in the Prerogative Court of Canterbury on 27 April 1799. That was the senior church court for wills in England, where the estates of people with property of some standing were usually settled.

In 1801 his daughter Elizabeth married Thomas Croome, an attorney of Stroud. Croome later bought the Manor of Painswick, and he died "of the Gravel Pits in the parish of Randwick" in 1839. Their son was christened Thomas Clutterbuck Croome.

Samuel's own baptism and marriage have not been found, and neither has Mary's maiden name.
