Elizabeth Clutterbuck
Elizabeth Clutterbuck was the youngest daughter of Samuel Clutterbuck, a gentleman of Cainscross in the parish of Randwick, Gloucestershire, and his wife Mary. She was christened at Randwick on 1 November 1767. Her older brothers and sister were John, Samuel and Mary, and a sister Ann had died as a small child.
Her father made his will in about 1796. He left "my youngest daughter Elizabeth Clutterbuck" a house with a garden and orchard at Frampton upon Severn. He left her and her sister Mary together the family home, "the Gravel pits" at Cainscross, which he had bought from Thomas Holmes. The will was proved in 1799.
On 1 July 1801 Thomas Croome, a gentleman of Stroud, swore the allegation for a licence to marry her. An allegation was the sworn statement a couple made to obtain a licence to marry without banns. It gives them both as 26, though she was in fact nearer 33. They married at Randwick on 7 July 1801. A Mary Clutterbuck was one of the witnesses. Her husband was an attorney, and in 1804 he bought the Manor of Painswick.
Their daughter Elizabeth was christened at Randwick on 13 December 1802, and their son Thomas Clutterbuck Croome on 5 May 1807. The son carried her surname as his middle name. He became a solicitor and, after his father, lord of the Manor of Painswick.
The Croomes lived at the Gravel Pits, the house she and her sister had inherited. Her husband died there in 1839. His will does not mention a wife, so she had probably died before him. Her death has not been found.
