Samuel Feld
Samuel Feld was born on 10 February 1896 in Galicia, the Polish province of the Austrian empire. His naturalization papers give that date and that place. When his wife was naturalized in 1940 her papers named his birthplace as Stebnik, a town near Drohobych in eastern Galicia. Galicia was home to hundreds of thousands of Jews, and in the years before the First World War a great many of them left for America. Samuel's father was Solomon Feld and his mother was Rachel Feld.
Samuel came to the United States in 1913, at about seventeen. Within seven years he had begun the road to citizenship. He filed his declaration of intention in Brooklyn on 29 April 1920, giving his birth as 10 February 1896 in Galicia, Austria. His petition followed in the federal court for the Eastern District of New York, and he became a citizen in June 1925.
On 1 March 1919 Samuel married Celia Grossman in Brooklyn. He was 23, a clerk, living at 149 Thatford Avenue. She was 25 and lived at 125 Osborne Street. Both were born in Galicia, and it was the first marriage for each. They were married at 466 Rockaway Avenue by Solomon Langner, who gave his own address as 107 Attorney Street on the Lower East Side of Manhattan. The witnesses were Abraham Levin and a man who signed as Meirow Pamnoff. Samuel signed the back of the certificate himself.
Their daughter Sylvia was born in Brooklyn on 15 November 1919. In January 1920 the census found the young family in Kings County: Samuel, 24, Celia, 25, and Sylvia, two months old. Their son Irving followed on 8 January 1921.
The family stayed in Brownsville, the crowded Jewish neighborhood of east Brooklyn. In 1930 Sam, 34, and Celia, 35, had Sylvia, 10, and Irving, 9, at home. By 1935 they had moved to 710 Stone Avenue, where they paid $32 a month in rent, and they were still there in April 1940. Samuel was 44, Celia 46 and Irving 19.
In 1942, when every man born between 1877 and 1897 had to register for the draft, Samuel registered in Brooklyn and gave his birth date as 15 February 1896. In April 1950 the census found Sam Feld, 54, working as a presser in the men's clothing trade, with Celia, 53. They lived in the same Brownsville enumeration district as their son Irving, one page further along the enumerator's route.
Samuel filed for Social Security benefits in July 1963. He spent his last years at Deerfield Beach, Broward County, Florida, where his daughter Sylvia and his son Irving also lived. He died on 9 December 1988, aged 92.
