Samuel James Ware Standridge was born in 1838 in Habersham County, in the north east Georgia hills, the third child of James D. Standridge, a South Carolinian, and Nancy Priscilla Self of Alabama. The family moved west to the Ouachita Mountains of Arkansas, where his father settled at Mount Ida. There, on 2 October 1856, at eighteen, he married Margret Sarah Ann Bates, a girl of fifteen born in Cherokee County, Georgia. Cicero was born in 1857, Sarah Ann in 1859 and James William Ware in 1860.

In 1862 he enlisted as a private in Company H of the 4th Arkansas Infantry, Confederate, the regiment his father also served in. On 4 March 1864 he was released at Chattanooga, Tennessee, and there enlisted as a private in Company A of the 1st Georgia Infantry Battalion, a Union unit recruited at Chattanooga that spring from Georgia men who had deserted or been taken from the Confederate army. He came home to Mount Ida and the children kept coming: Samuel Jr. in 1862, Eliza in 1868, Verlinda in 1869, Amanda in 1872, Stephen and Mary Anne in 1874, Henry in 1875. He died on 14 November 1877, aged about 39, with Margret expecting their twelfth child, Margaret Rebecca, born the next year.

He was buried in the family ground at Mount Ida, now Stanley-Standridge Cemetery, and lay in an unmarked grave for fifty years. On 28 May 1929 W. R. McKinney of Norman, who had married his daughter Annie, applied to the War Department for a soldier's headstone for Samuel J. Standridge, private, Company A, 1st Battalion Georgia Infantry, a Union Civil War soldier, died 14 November 1877, cemetery Standridge, Mount Ida. The clerk wrote Union and Civil War across the top. The stone was ordered on 20 May 1930, shipped from Lee, Massachusetts in August and set in the ground: a white government marker reading Samuel Standridge, Co. A, 1 Ga. Inf.
