James William Ware Standridge
James William Ware Standridge was born in 1860 at Mount Ida, Montgomery County, Arkansas, in the Ouachita Mountains, the third child of Samuel James Ware Standridge and Margret Sarah Ann Bates, who had married in 1856 and come up from the Georgia hill country. His grandfather James D. Standridge, a South Carolinian, had settled the family in the county before the war. When James was two his father went into the Confederate 4th Arkansas Infantry; by 1864 he was at Chattanooga wearing Union blue in the 1st Georgia Infantry Battalion, and he came home to die in November 1877, when James was seventeen, leaving his mother with eleven children, the youngest not yet born.
In 1884 he married John Ann Davis, born the same year as himself, a daughter of John C. Davis and Nellie Ann Cearly. Nine children came between 1885 and 1902: Nellie, Cecil, John David, Levi, who died in infancy in 1892, Isaac, Avis, Dicie, Vera and Carl. John Ann died in 1917. By the family's record he married Emaline Walker, twenty years younger, in 1903, which cannot be right while his first wife lived; a daughter Lita was born in 1924. He died in 1950, aged about 90, and is buried in the cemetery that bears his family's name at Mount Ida, near his parents.
