Samuel Keith
Samuel Keith was born at Bridgewater, Massachusetts, in 1676. He was a son of the Rev. James Keith, the town's first minister, and of Susanna Edson, a daughter of the deacon. The Bridgewater book enters his birth from his stone as "s. Rev. James and Susanna, 1676". A Keith family obelisk has the same words: "Samuel, son of Rev. James & Susanna Keith, born 1676." The day is given as 20 December.
On 20 January 1702/3 he married Bethiah Fobes. The town clerk wrote it "Samuel and Bethiah Fobes, Jan. 20, 1702-3". The double year comes from the old calendar, in which the year began on 25 March, so a January wedding fell in 1702 by the reckoning then and in 1703 by the modern one. Bethiah was a daughter of Deacon Edward Fobes and Elizabeth Howard. Two of her sisters married his brothers. Elizabeth married Joseph Keith, and Hannah married Timothy Keith in 1710.
They lived in South Bridgewater and had nine children. Constant was born on 22 February 1703 and married a Hayward. Amos followed on 1 May 1705 and Samuel on 30 August 1707. That Samuel became a deacon and died in 1798. Bithia was born on 29 December 1710, Susanna on 2 September 1714 and Ebenezer on 25 October 1716. Robert came on 19 October 1718, and Jane on 4 December 1720; she married Joseph Cowen. Benjamin, the last, was born on 19 April 1723. The clerk entered each one as a child of "Samuel and Bithia".
He died on 3 February 1759. His slate stone at Bridgewater reads "Here lies Buried Mr SAMUEL KEITH Who Died FEBRUARY ye 3d 1759 In ye 82d year of his Age." Bethiah outlived him by eleven years. Their son Ebenezer died of smallpox in 1778 and was buried in his own field.
