Samuel Sherman
Baptised at Dedham in Essex on 11 January 1573, the son of Henry Sherman the elder, clothier of Dedham, and Susan Lawrance. He lived at Dedham and at Ardleigh, married a woman named Phillippa whose surname is not recorded, and died at Ardleigh in 1615.
He appears as a legatee three times over in the family's paper: under the will of his grandfather Henry Sherman of Colchester dated 20 January 1590, in his father's will of 21 August 1610, and under the will of his mother Susan dated ten days after his father's. He was overseer of the will of his brother in law Simon Fenn in 1609, and in October 1599 the Dedham manor court recorded a surrender to his use of a third part of a three acre parcel called Pepers field.
His own will, headed "Samuel Sherman of Dedham and Ardley, Essex," was dated 20 January 1615/16 and proved six weeks later. It divides a clothier's estate among four sons and two daughters, all of it charged to fall in after his widow's death, and it names his youngest son: "To Phillipp my sonne 5 closes of land in possession of Lionel Cheute, parcel of lands late John Wrenches, after decease of wife." That Phillipp was not yet five. Seventeen years later he sailed for New England, and he ended a founder and the first secretary of Rhode Island.
