Sarah A. was born in North Carolina about 1824, of North Carolina parents, and came into the north Georgia mountains like most of that country did.

She married George W. Crawford, born in North Carolina about 1820, and bore at least seven children in Georgia, the last of them Josephine in 1863. Georgia county marriages, Fannin County, 17 February 1870: BERRY CARTER married SALLY A. CRAWFORD. He was about twenty three and she about forty six.

That return proves what the 1880 census only implies. The census shows a wife in a Carter house with a Crawford daughter in it; the licence names her Crawford at the moment she married Carter. Her first husband was dead or gone before February 1870.

The 1880 census of Morganton in Fannin County has the three of them: Berry at the head, Sarah A. as wife keeping house, and Josephine Crawford, seventeen, single, at home, entered as daughter.

Neither half of her name here is hers. Carter is her second husband's. Crawford was her first husband's. Sally is what she was called. Her maiden name is not known. Her eldest son, William, was born about 1843, so the first marriage was probably in the early eighteen forties, before Fannin County existed.
