Sarah Andruss
Sarah Andruss was born on 16 March 1683/4, the fifth child of Abraham Andruss and his wife Rebecca. Her father was one of the thirty men who signed the articles of 1674 to settle Mattatuck, which became Waterbury, and one of the first two townsmen chosen there. The family name was usually spelled Andrews, though rarely or never on the Waterbury records.
On 7 April 1703, at nineteen, she married Joseph Lewis, a cloth weaver from Simsbury and the first outsider to settle in the town. Over forty six years of marriage he became a selectman, the town treasurer, a fifteen-session deputy to the General Court and the fourth deacon of the church.
She bore eight children. The first, a daughter, was born on 12 August 1704 and died the next month. After her came Joseph in 1705, Sarah in 1708, John in 1711, Mary in 1714, Thomas in 1716, Samuel in 1718 and Abraham in 1721, who died young. Thomas went to Yale and became a minister. Samuel became a deacon twice over, at Waterbury and then at Salem.
In the autumn of 1749 she lost her son Joseph, her daughter-in-law Mary and her husband within two months. She lived as his widow for twenty three more years. Bronson's history gives her death once as 5 March 1773 and twice as 6 March 1773. She was eighty nine.
