Sarah Ann Ricketson was born on 18 January 1867 in Coffee County, Georgia, a daughter of Vincent Ricketson and Sarah Tucker. Her father had come home from the Civil War with one leg, the other amputated after he was shot at Trevilian Station in Virginia in 1864, and he farmed a hundred acres from a double-penned log house northwest of Douglas. About 1886, when she was nineteen, she married John Elisha Harper, a farmer six years older. They lived in Militia District 748, the country around Douglas.
She bore a daughter, Phoebe, and ten or more sons. In the 1910 census she was forty-three and ten boys were at home, Elisha, 23, Oliver, Tommie, Lunzie, Kyler, Liza, Jacob, Clem, Johnie and Babe, who was four.
John died in March 1912 and Sarah was a widow at forty-five. In August she applied to the Ordinary of Coffee County for letters of administration on his estate. Four years later she sat with her own father through his last illness. In 1920 she was living at Douglas with her sons Johnie, Jacob and Eli John. In August 1927 her son Clem, a married farmer of twenty-four, died of typhoid fever after a month's illness; his death certificate names his mother as "Sarah Rickerson" of Coffee County. In 1930 she was still at Douglas.
Sarah Ann Harper died on 9 May 1937 in Coffee County, aged seventy. She was buried in Salem Cemetery, where Clem already lay. Her stone reads "Sarah Ricketson Harper".
