Sarah Tucker
Sarah Tucker was born on 12 November 1838 in south Georgia. Family accounts give her birthplace as Irwin County and her parents as Richard Murphy Tucker and Mary Paulk. She married Vincent Ricketson, a young man of the same country, and in 1858 they settled on the lot of land northwest of present-day Douglas where he lived the rest of his life.
Their first child, Polly, was born about 1859. In 1864 her husband came home from the war in Virginia with one leg, the other amputated above the knee after he was shot at Trevilian Station. She raised ten children on that farm: Polly, Lizzie, Allen, Sarah, John, Eliza, Becky, Nellie, Arthur and Richard, the last born about 1883.
Sarah died on 22 September 1904, aged sixty-five, and was buried at Hebron Church in Coffee County. Her stone calls her "Sarah, wife of Vinson Ricketson". When her husband's seventy-ninth birthday was written up in the county paper in December 1915, about two hundred of their descendants came to the dinner, and the writer noted that Vincent "married Miss Sarah Tucker who has been dead many years."
