Sarah Ashworth
Sarah Ashworth was born in England about 1799. She married Joseph Ashworth, and her maiden name is not recorded. Their eldest son Samuel was born in England about 1826. Their daughter Eliza was born in Pittsburgh in 1832, so the family probably crossed between those years.
Eight of her children were living when their father's land was divided. They were Nancy, Samuel, Robert, Eliza Ann, Eliza Sarah, Hannah Mary, Joseph and Olive. From 1841 the family owned three lots on the New Franklin road in Reserve Township, Allegheny County.
Joseph died before 1860 without a will. In July 1860 the census taker found Sarah in Reserve Township, aged sixty-one. He wrote her occupation as "Widow Lady". She held real estate worth $2,000 and personal property worth $100. Her son Joseph, twenty, an engine builder, lived with her. So did a Mary Ashworth of eighteen and a baby a month old, probably Joseph's wife and child. Her youngest, Olive, was seventeen. Four dwellings along lived an English-born master butcher named Ashworth, about thirty-two, with an English-born wife and a small son, Frank. He was probably her son Robert, who had a wife named Frances.
On 2 January 1864 she and seven of her children deeded the three lots to her son Samuel for $2,700. Her name heads the deed: "Sarah Ashworth widow of Joseph Ashworth deceased of Allegheny County Pennsylvania." She acknowledged it at Allegheny on 4 May 1864. In July her daughter Olive sold Samuel her own eighth share, and that deed made the sale "subject to the dower interest of Sarah Ashworth widow of the said Joseph Ashworth." A dower was the part of a husband's land that his widow held for the rest of her life.
She was alive in May 1864. When and where she died is not known.
