Sarah Cowles
Sarah Cowles was born at Farmington in Connecticut about 1647, a daughter of John Cowles and his wife Hannah. Her name is written Coles in most of the older records. Her father was one of the first proprietors of Farmington and in 1660 helped found Hatfield in Massachusetts.
She married Nathaniel Goodwin of Hartford, a weaver and later one of the town's townsmen. Their children were Nathaniel, born in July 1665, Sarah, born in April 1668, and John, baptised on 19 May 1672.
Her father died at Hatfield in September 1675. Her mother came back to Hartford to live with Sarah's sister Hannah and her husband Caleb Stanley. Sarah died at Hartford on 8 May 1676, aged twenty nine. Her son John was not yet four.
She was buried in the Centre Church burying ground at Hartford. Her stone was still standing in 1891, the oldest in Hartford bearing the name of Goodwin. Her mother was buried in the same ground in 1683. Her husband married again, to Elizabeth Pratt.
