Dea. John Goodwin
John Goodwin was baptised on 19 May 1672, the youngest child of Nathaniel Goodwin of Hartford by his first wife, Sarah Cowles. His mother died in May 1676, before he was four. His father married again, to Elizabeth Pratt, and had four more children.
He was the first of the Goodwins to settle on the east side of the Connecticut River, the part of Hartford that later became East Hartford. Like his father he was a weaver. His father's will of 1712 left him two acres of meadow on the east side of the river, which had come down from his grandfather Ozias, and "my second finest weaving reed."
He served the east side as collector of the Ecclesiastical Society in 1706. The society was the parish organisation that raised the minister's salary, and the collector gathered the rate. He was "for over twenty years a Deacon of the church."
His first wife was named Sarah. The Goodwin family history of 1891 says of her that "we know nothing" of her earlier life. Their children were Hannah, born in 1698, who married Timothy Porter; Damaris, born in 1699/1700; Mary, baptised on 18 January 1701/2, who married Joseph Cowles; Sarah, who married Samuel Smith; John, born in 1706, who married Dorothy Pitkin; and William, Joseph, Caleb, Susanna, Richard and Ruth. Sarah died in May 1735.
Before June 1740 he married Mary (Hosmer) Olmsted. He made his will on 9 May 1749. William Pitkin, William Pitkin Jr. and George Pitkin witnessed it. He died on 6 February 1757, aged eighty six.
