Sarah Elizabeth Kelley
Sarah Elizabeth Kelley was born on 8 July 1826 and went by Elizabeth. Family accounts name her parents as Thomas and Elizabeth Kelly, and the family wrote the name both Kelley and Kelly. She married Robert Mitchell St. Clair and bore him nine children between 1847 and 1863, among them Mary Frances, born in 1854, who married Solomon D. Secrist.
She was widowed in April 1882 and lived another 26 years. A restored portrait shows her in old age, her gray hair parted in the middle and drawn back, a dark kerchief knotted at the throat of a pale dress.
Elizabeth M. St. Clair died at her home near Blue Ridge at 10:50 on 6 August 1908, at 82. The Bedford Bulletin wrote that she had joined the Baptist church, that seven of her nine children were living, three sons and four daughters, and that she left thirty six grandchildren and nine great-grandchildren. Her stone in the St. Clair Cemetery is carved with two clasped hands above the words OUR DEAR MOTHER, ELIZABETH ST. CLAIR, BORN JULY 8, 1826, DIED AUG. 6, 1908, and a verse.
