Sarah Elma Smith was born on 16 July 1877. Her parents were Isaac Edison Smith, a farmer who had ridden with the 7th West Virginia Cavalry in the Civil War, and Cordelia Ann Scott. She went by Elma. Her sister Rosa Belle was born in 1878.

On 2 October 1895, at 18, she married Raymond R. Rice, a 23-year-old Morgantown merchant, at Morgantown. The Methodist Protestant minister I. A. Barnes married them. Their son Philip Henry was born in 1896. Raymond became a Methodist Protestant minister, and their daughter Mary Ruth was born on 9 July 1903 at Lorentz, in Upshur County, where the birth register calls her mother simply "Elma".

By 1907 Raymond was pastor at Newburg, in Preston County, and they had four children. That September he died of typhoid fever in the Newburg parsonage, aged 35. Elma was 30.

She married again, to Granville Thomas Cole Radabaugh, called Cole, and lived near Masontown. In January 1926 her father died at Bull Run, near by, and Cole gave the particulars for his certificate. Elma was widowed a second time when Cole died in 1952. She died at Arthurdale on 17 November 1960, aged 83, of a coronary occlusion. She is buried at Mount Zion Cemetery, near Masontown.
