Sarah Frances Hottinger
Sarah Frances Hottinger was born on 4 June 1845 in Shenandoah County, Virginia, the daughter of Jacob Hottinger and his wife Nelly.
On 25 August 1864, in Rockingham County, she married Peter S. Hulvey. The county register entered her as eighteen, born in Shenandoah County, the daughter of Jacob Hottinger and Nelly. Her family remembers the date as 15 August. It was the last full year of the Civil War, and that autumn Union cavalry burned barns and mills up and down the valley.
Sarah and Peter lived near Fort Seybert in Pendleton County, West Virginia. She bore at least five children: William, George, Margaret Ann, Lewis Howard and Albert Pete. Peter died about 1875, leaving her with all five under nine years old.
In 1880 the census found Sarah in Pendleton County with her children Daniel W., George F., Margaret A., Louis H. and Albert P. Her son Lewis went west to the Choctaw Nation in the 1890s and married there. When he applied for Social Security he named his mother as Sarah F. Hatonger, a spelling of Hottinger.
Sarah lived out her life at Fort Seybert and died there on 4 June 1930, her eighty-fifth birthday. She is buried in the Fairview Bethel United Methodist Church Cemetery, with Peter.
