Sarah Moore
Sarah was the wife of Major Abel Moulton, who settled at Castleton, Vermont, in 1771. Her maiden name was probably Moore, and she may have been born on 11 April 1746 at Salisbury, Connecticut. Her gravestone gives her age at death as 59, which puts her birth about 1747. Moore was a name her daughter Sarah's family used: Sarah's sons included a Moore Hoyt, born in 1796, who became a physician, and a grandson was Albert Moore Hoyt.
Abel kept a log cabin store at Castleton and built a frame house there in 1774. He died of smallpox in October 1776, at thirty-five. Their daughter Sarah was about nine. A daughter Phebe, born in 1775, was still a baby.
Sarah then married Nehemiah Hoit, a young man from Stamford, Connecticut, who had come to Castleton in 1771. He had been with Ethan Allen at the taking of Fort Ticonderoga in May 1775. They lived for a time in the Moulton house and later moved to the south part of the town. When the Congregational Church of Castleton was organized in the fall of 1784, with nine men and nine women, Nehemiah and Sarah Hoit were both among the original members. He was its first deacon.
In January 1782 her daughter Sarah Moulton married Noah Hoyt, her husband's younger brother. She probably had Hoyt children named Lucy (1779), Nancy (1782), Nehemiah (1789) and Matilda (1790). Sarah Hoit died at Castleton on 6 November 1806 and is buried in the Congregational Cemetery there.
