Sarah Moulton
Sarah Moulton was born about 1767, the daughter of Major Abel Moulton and his wife Sarah. Her father came to Castleton, Vermont, in 1771, when she was a small child. He kept a log cabin store on the hill in the west part of the village and in 1774 built a frame house. He died of smallpox in October 1776, when she was about nine.
Her mother then married Nehemiah Hoit, a young man from Stamford, Connecticut, who had come to Castleton the same year as the Moultons. He had followed Ethan Allen into Fort Ticonderoga in May 1775. The family lived for a time in the Moulton house.
On 23 January 1782 Sarah married her stepfather's younger brother, Noah Hoyt, a Stamford farmer. They lived in Stamford and then at Castleton, where their children Calvin, Noah, Sarah and Moore were born between 1785 and 1796. Moore was very likely her mother's maiden name. Her son Moore became a physician. Noah died in 1811. Sarah lived another forty-six years as his widow and died on 8 September 1857, "aged 90, or more". Her grandson Albert, born in 1824, was farming at Castleton when she died.
