Sarah Poland
Sarah Poland was the wife of Daniel Poland of Chebacco parish in Ipswich, Essex County, Massachusetts. Her maiden name is not known. She is named as the mother at all ten of her children's baptisms, from 1752 to 1772.
On 17 May 1752 she had three children baptised at Ipswich on one day: Daniel, Sarah and Anna. By December 1753 the family had moved to Wenham, where Lieutenant Dodge took them into his house, "Daniel and Sarah Poland and 3 small Children Daniel, Sarah, & Anna Under Low Circumstances". Six more children were baptised at Ipswich in the next twelve years: Martha in 1754, Zebulon in 1756, John in 1758, Abner in 1760, William in 1763 and Samuel in 1765.
Her husband was very probably the Daniel Poland of Beverly who drowned off Little Misery Island on 19 August 1768, leaving "a Wife and 7 or 8 Children". By July 1772 she was a widow. Her youngest son, Solomon, was baptised at Wenham on 12 July 1772 as "s. Sarah, wid. Daniel".
She headed her own household in Wenham after that. The town's tax rolls list "Widow Sarah Poland" in the East Ward in 1775 and again in 1777. Five of her sons went to the Revolution. In 1777 one of them asked that his wages be paid to "widow Sarah Poland of Wenham".
Her eldest son, Daniel, married Mary Baley at Wenham in 1771. Their first child, a daughter baptised Sarah on 26 June 1774, was very probably named for her. The date of her death is not known.
