Serj. Nathaniel Sutliffe
Nathaniel Sutliffe was born at Medfield in Massachusetts in 1672 and was carried to Deerfield with his parents the next year. His father was killed at the falls when he was four, and about 1680 his mother and stepfather took the family to Branford in Connecticut.
He was back in Massachusetts long enough to be chosen selectman of Deerfield in 1702, then returned to Branford, where the church manual gives his name and his wife's in 1704, and then went with his brother John to Durham. At the first town meeting held there he was elected constable. In 1714 the town voted that the meeting house be seated, and made choice of James Wadsworth, Caleb Seward Jr., Nathaniel Sutliffe, William Seward and Henry Crane to be a committee to seat the house, which is the committee that decided where every family in the town would sit. He was Representative for Durham for four years, in 1728 and 1729 and 1730 and 1731, and the Durham history says he took an active part in matters pertaining to church and education.
He and his brother settled on Haddam Quarter together in 1723, keeping the town's leave to go on attending worship at Durham. He died on 1 April 1732 in his sixtieth year and is buried in the old cemetery at Durham, where his wife was laid fifteen months later.
