Sigurd Mander Flornes
Sigurd Mander Flornes was born in Norway on 19 January 1884, the date he gave when he registered for the draft. His burial memorial gives 18 January 1883 and names Trondheim as his birthplace.
By 1913 he was living in Randolph Township, Morris County, New Jersey, and married to Lydia Jane Stoll, a New Jersey woman two years older than he was, born at Newton in Sussex County. Their daughter Clara Delinda was born at Ironia in Randolph Township on 20 September 1913. A son, Walter Mander Flornes, was born in 1916 and died in 1917. A second son, Sigurd Mander Flornes Jr., was born at Morristown on 5 November 1920.
On 12 September 1918 Sigurd registered for the draft at Dover. That day every man aged 18 to 45 had to sign up for the First World War. He was 34. He lived on rural route 2 out of Dover at Golden Corner. He was still a citizen of Norway and had not declared any intention to naturalize. He worked as a watchman for the Hercules Powder Company at Kenvil, a works that made explosives. The registrar described him as of medium height and slender, with blue eyes and brown hair. He named Lydia Jane Flornes as his nearest relative and signed the card in a clear hand: "Sigurd Mander Flornes."
In 1920 the family lived in Randolph Township: Sigurd, 37, Lydia, 39, and Clara, 6. The census entry gives his birthplace as New Jersey.
Sigurd died at Ironia on 31 January 1929, aged 45. Clara was 15 and Sigurd Jr. was 8. He is buried in the family plot in Pleasant Hill Cemetery at Randolph, where Lydia, their son Walter and later Clara and her husband Robert Trowbridge were also laid. A photograph of him survives, showing a man in a flat cap and heavy coat.
