Clara Delinda Flornes
Clara Delinda Flornes was born on 20 September 1913 at Ironia, a village in Randolph Township, Morris County, New Jersey. Her father, Sigurd Mander Flornes, had been born in Norway in 1884. Her mother, Lydia Jane Stoll, was born at Newton, Sussex County, New Jersey, in 1881.
Clara was the eldest child. A brother, Walter Mander Flornes, was born in 1916 and died the next year. A second brother, Sigurd Mander Flornes Jr., was born at Morristown on 5 November 1920. In 1920 the family lived in Randolph Township: Sigurd, 37, Lydia, 39, and Clara, 6. Her father was working as a watchman at the Hercules Powder Company's explosives works at Kenvil in 1918.
Her father died at Ironia on 31 January 1929, when Clara was 15. In 1933 she married Robert Trowbridge, a Randolph Township man fourteen years older than she was. Their marriage was recorded in Bergen County. They had four children: Doris Carolyn, about 1935; Robert William, 15 March 1936; Barbara Marie, 5 May 1940; and Walter Leroy, 2 April 1944. The last three were born at Dover. Her mother died in March 1941.
A photograph from about 1941 shows Clara beside Robert in front of a car, in a light dress, his arm around her shoulders. In 1950 she was 36 and keeping house in Randolph Township for Robert, their four children and Robert's mother, Anna May, who was 86.
When her daughter Doris married at Arlington, Virginia, on 3 February 1958, the marriage certificate named Clara Flornes as the bride's mother. In August 1964 Clara, then living at Dover, applied for Social Security and named her parents as Sigurd M. Flornes and Lydia J. Stoll.
Robert died in 1967. Clara outlived him by twenty-one years and died on 25 April 1988, aged 74. She is buried beside him in Pleasant Hill Cemetery at Randolph. Her stone reads "Clara D. Trowbridge, Sept. 20, 1913, Apr. 25, 1988, Beloved Mother."
