Simon W. Walton

Simon W. Walton was born on 25 May 1838, the third of the nine children of David Walton of Fayette and Elizabeth Cromwell Lord of Mercer. Every census of his life says he was born in Maine, but when his son Albert married at Livermore Falls on 4 August 1894 and his daughter Sadie May married on 9 October 1907, the clerk wrote the groom's father's birthplace as Lowell, Massachusetts, the mill city on the Merrimack where Maine families went for work. His name was sometimes written Simeon.

He married Susan R. Mosher in 1864. She was eleven years older than he and died in 1867, leaving two small sons, Albert Ernest and Arthur Ernest. The same year he married Eliza Sawtell, eighteen, a Belgrade girl whose mother had died three weeks after her birth. They had four more children: Almon Lester (1868, at Mercer), Charles William (1875), John Christopher (1881) and Sadie May (1886).

He lived to see his son Almon die, his grandson Percy grow up, and the twentieth century a third of the way through. He died at Fayette on 15 May 1932, a week and a half short of ninety-four, and the Waterville Morning Sentinel printed his obituary on 18 May. He is buried at Lakeview Cemetery in Oakland under the family's granite WALTON monument, with a flat marker of his own, SIMON W., beside Eliza's.
